Building Digital Privacy in Australia: My Professional Journey
My name is Mia Wexford, and I am an Australian IT security professional focused on privacy engineering, VPN architecture, and secure network design. My work is driven by a long-standing commitment to protecting everyday users from unnecessary exposure, tracking, and digital vulnerability in an increasingly monitored online environment.
I completed my formal education at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), where I studied Information Technology with a strong emphasis on network security and real-world system implementation. The Professional Experience program at UTS allowed me to move beyond theory and apply security principles in practical, production-level environments—an experience that strongly shaped my career direction.
Fifteen Years of Applied IT Security Experience
While academic training provided structure, my expertise has been forged through more than fifteen years of continuous, hands-on work in the Australian IT sector.
From 2008 to 2012, I worked as a Network Administrator and Security Analyst within a large Australian telecommunications company. This role offered rare insight into ISP-scale infrastructure, metadata handling, traffic monitoring, and the operational realities of large network environments.
Between 2012 and 2016, I transitioned into consulting, supporting small and medium-sized businesses across Melbourne. My responsibilities included deploying security frameworks, performing vulnerability testing, and educating non-technical teams on practical cybersecurity hygiene.
Since 2016, I have operated as an independent security consultant and educator, specialising in VPN technology and privacy solutions for individuals and families. My work today involves tailored consultations, network audits, long-term security planning, and ongoing analysis of emerging surveillance techniques and encryption standards.
Advocacy, Research, and Public Engagement
Alongside my technical practice, I am actively involved in privacy advocacy in Australia. I have contributed to public discussions around data retention legislation, taken part in cybersecurity forums, and collaborated with privacy-oriented organisations to support digital rights and informed decision-making.
My research and communication focus on making complex security concepts understandable and actionable for non-experts—because privacy should not be reserved for specialists alone.
Focus Areas and Core Expertise
Today, my professional focus centres on building and evaluating VPN solutions that prioritise transparency, reliability, and user trust. I continue to research secure tunnelling methods, traffic obfuscation, and privacy-first design models suitable for modern Australian internet conditions.
